One of the most challenging and frustrating aspects of recovering from an eating disorder is the enormous cost of effective treatment. Once someone is either on their death-bed or has chosen to receive help, they have a whole new battle ahead of them - How do I pay for it?
Part of AFED's mission is to provide low-cost/free support via groups, relationships and collaboration with professional resources. Following are groups created by the AFED team. Some are run by professionals while others are led by a facilitator or group members themselves.
What is DBT?
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) has proven to be an effective therapy for individuals suffering from eating disorders, especially bulimia and binge eating disorders. DBT gives individuals tools and skills to empower them to be as effective as they can be in life. DBT emphasizes 4 main skills: Mindfulness, Interpersonal Effectiveness, Distress Tolerance and Emotion Regulation.

This group was conceived as a result of the community's lack of active, free support groups for individuals who are struggling with eating disorders or that have struggled in the past. This non-threatening group is for people of all ages who have any type of eating disorder, or for those who are currently in recovery, to give and receive support from others who really understand.
Additionally, because eating disorders can be isolating, this group is a "social" group in which to make friends. While we will meet to discuss everyone's progress in recovery, we also enjoy fun events together such as: coffee house meet-ups, movies, pottery painting, Austin Parks, board-games, Main Event - bowling, laser tag, glow golf, Yoga, etc.
The Facilitator of this group, Carolyn Dower, is a parent of a now fully recovered child who fought tirelessly through a devastating eating disorder. She and her family know first-hand what it's like to feel alone and helpless in trying desperately to keep their own daughter alive.
If you have a loved-one suffering with an eating disorder, this group is for you! Find support and guidance from others who understand. For more information send an email to email@example.com or check out our calendar. Meetings are held at Faith Lutheran Church, 6600 Woodrow, Austin, Texas, 78757 - Room 203.
